Press Release

Exhibition of paintings by Simon Whitfield at the Dukes Gallery

An exhibition of paintings entitled New Romantics by Simon Whitfield will be on display at the Dukes, Moor Lane, Lancaster from Monday 6th May until Friday 1st June 2001. This is Simon’s first exhibition in Lancaster and he is rapidly establishing himself a reputation as an innovative artist aiming to revitalise the romantic tradition.

Simon is inspired by the drama and magnificence of the Lake District mountains. His landscape paintings are subdued yet passionate. On first viewing his work appears controlled, almost photographic and detailed but on closer inspection they are expressive, impressionistic and loosely painted. Simon’s paintings are energetic and display a disconcerting use of perspective that draws the viewer in to the painting. There are also paintings based on the Yorkshire Dales and other subject matter in this exhibition.

Simon came to "art" quite recently after buying a set of Russian oil paints for a pound on a Polish mountain market! He is self-taught and he hopes to follow in the footsteps of great English Romantics such as Turner. In his first two years as a painter Simon has sold numerous works privately. Simon has also exhibited in Kendal and in London.

Simon is based locally and future work will be inspired by locations further afield

such as the Scottish Highlands, Tibet, New Mexico and Morocco’s Atlas mountains.

The gallery is open Monday — Saturday 10am — 10pm.
