The London Classic Theatre Company will be presenting the classic costume farce, A Game of Love and Chance at the Dukes on Thursday 24th May at 7.30pm. They are among the UK’s most exciting new touring companies and for their critically acclaimed inaugural season in April last year they played to packed houses nationwide. This is a great opportunity to see them in Lancaster for the first time.
In A Game of Love and Chance, Silvia awaits the arrival of Dorante, the young gentleman her father has arranged for her to marry. She decides to exchange her clothes with her maid, Lisette, so that she can observe her husband-to-be while in disguise. Meanwhile Dorante and his servant Harlequin have concocted a similar plan. The scene is set for confusion upon confusion as the two pairs of lovers collide.
A fast and furious comedy of manners, The Game of Love and Chance mixes bold characterization with dazzling comic language. French dramatist Marivaux is at the height of his powers as he orchestrates a farcical ménage-à-trois with dazzling results.
Pierre Carlet de Marivaux (1688 — 1763) wrote over thirty comedies of love and intrigue, and was one of the most daring and original of the 18th Century French Dramatists. Recently a rich crop of new productions have rediscovered his comic virtuosity and dramatic skill, restoring his reputation to rival that of Molière.
A Game of Love and Chance will be a highly entertaining night at the theatre and a great chance to see this new, bold and exciting theatre company perform an enjoyable classic piece.
