Press Release

Not the National Theatre Company at the Dukes

Not the National Theatre Company present A Place at the Table at the Dukes on Saturday 12th May 2001 at 8pm. This is the eighteenth year of touring the UK for the company and they have earned themselves a strong and loyal following around the country. Not the National Theatre produce quality productions showcasing the very best in new British writing.

A Place at the Table is a witty and sharply observed satire set in the dog-eat-dog world of the TV sitcom production, where ratings define levels of success, fashion dictates survival and artistic integrity is a luxury that few can afford. Sarah is a tough and ambitious rising TV executive who encourages a talented young writer called Adam, to create a hard-hitting, controversial sitcom on a subject close to his heart — he is a wheelchair user. When the project becomes too hot to handle will Sarah just drop Adam to save her own place at the executive table, or will she fight for it to be completed?

Award-winning writer Simon Block has a flagrant disregard for political correctness and employs wickedly funny dialogue to make this work brilliantly comic and deeply perceptive. Simon is a prolific TV writer whose latest comedy Safe as Houses with Ricky Tomlinson was shown last Autumn.

The play is directed by distinguished television director A.J.Quinn, whose extensive credits include Peak Practice, Brookside, The Bill, Where Are the Heart Is and Monarch of the Glen.

A Place at the Table will be a very funny, sharp and politically incorrect night out at the theatre! Please call the Dukes on 01524 66645 for tickets and further information.
