PRESS RELEASE

HERITAGE OPEN DAY AT THE DUKES

The Dukes will be taking part in the nationwide Heritage Open Day project on Saturday 16th September 2000, 10am-12pm and 2pm 4pm.  The whole of the Dukes building will be open to the public, free of charge.

Formerly St. Anne’s church founded in 1795 and converted into the theatre in 1971, the Dukes theatre is a listed building.  The whole Heritage Open Day initiative is being organised by the Civic Trust, a charity that is devoted to improving the quality of life in cities, towns and villages.

Many people will be familiar with the bar area and the main auditorium at the Dukes, but there is also a theatre- in - the - round that members of the public may not have been to before which is used for some of the Dukes’ theatre productions and other events.  There are also the dressing rooms, the scene dock, the projection and control room, the wardrobe department, offices and the Green Room housed in the building.  Everyone is welcome, especially those who have never been to the Dukes before.

For people interested in cinema, theatre or local buildings this day offers people the opportunity to discover more about their local theatre and cinema and the building that houses them.
