Morecambe Bay is the inspiration and setting for the Dukes first homegrown production of 2011.

Quicksand, a new co-production written by Ulverston’s Zosia Wand, will premiere at the Lancaster theatre from January 27-February 12 before transferring to Keswick’s Theatre by the Lake from February 16-26. “The setting is crucial to this play,” Zosia said. “I had been living in Ulverston for eight years when I realised I’d not set any of my work here.

Now, nearly everything I do is set locally because I love this place. “The landscape and environment affect me very deeply and the description of Morecambe Bay in Quicksand reflects how I feel about the area.”

Zosia has a Polish mother and is fluent in Polish. Quicksand is a love story between a young English man, training to be a solicitor in Lancaster, and a Polish woman who arrives in Ulverston. It is a moving and startling look at relationships, family secrets and expectations.

Quicksand is the third new play rooted in the North to be staged in The Round at The Dukes following its successes with Sabbat(2009) which told the story of the Lancashire witches, and The Gift & The Glory (2010) set in the Lake District. Dukes director, Joe Sumsion said: “A good test of a play, particularly a locally written one, is that it should speak to everyone but have a particularly strong relevance to people who live around here. “The location of Quicksand is essential as this play is all about romance and Morecambe Bay is intrinsically romantic.”

Before and during the run of Quicksand, The Dukes is hoping people will share their reasons for loving Morecambe Bay. These stories and photographs will be displayed at the theatre and on the theatre website.
