Hawkshead

Hawkshead lies just over half-way up the tract of forest and hills between Windermere and Consiton lakes.

The road access is rather narrow and winding but presents some of the best views. The town itself is compact, with reasonable parking (which you have to pay for).

The centre of the town is the market square. Roads are narrow with little or no footpaths so care is necessary.

William Wordsworth and his brother were pupils at the grammar school here. The Beatrix Potter gallery has a selection of original drawings and a display outlining her life.
