There are many amongst the fell walking community that regard Haweswater with disdain because it has been converted into a reservior. Don't let anyone tell you that Haweswater and the surrounding areas are not some of the best hiking in the lake district. Access is good, and the road leading to the small car park at the end is a cul de sac, which means there is no through traffic. Arrive early if you want to park easily.
The trails are in good condition. A good day hike is to take the path from the car park climbing steeply to Harter Fell, across the top of Harter Fell to Nan Biel Pass, then back down the parking lot. This particular trek can easily be extended.
There is a hotel half way along Haweswater, and in spring the woods near the dam are thick with bluebells and the air is heavy with their scent.
