Morecambe
Tourist information for Morecambe. A holiday resort on the north-west coast of England, plenty of accommodation and an amazing stone jetty with a bird theme.
It's most famous 'son' was Eric Morecambe of the comedy duo Morecambe and Wise. There is a bronze statue of Eric Morecambe on the promenade, it is set in beautiful surroundings, having interesting textured walkways and quotes in the pavement. The design of this area is thoroughly modern, using typefaces in an imaginative way. The lettering is allowed to run off the area in front of the statue onto the pavement. Overall it is surprising that the designers were allowed such freedom, which has paid off handsomely. This is one of the most-visited statues in the country, it's difficult to find a time when there are not people admiring it. You'll find our photographs of Morecambe in the main photo index.
It's difficult to escape the conclusion that Eric and Ernie did more to endear themselves to the people of this country than any royalty or politician.
The stone jetty is a long structure which sticks out into Morecambe bay. It and the surrounding area are themed around birds. There are coloured birds on top of bollards, bird statues, pelicans made from sheets of metal sandwiched together and a huge cockerel made from sheet metal on a roundabout. The impression is one of thoughtfulness and an overall design which has been executed without the usual penny-pinching associated with civic amenities. Children love this area, and grown-ups like the puzzles too, different sized eggs etc. There are several photos of this area in our collection.
