Morecambe photographs
This collection of photographs of Morecambe includes Eric Morecambe, the stone jetty, the promenade facing south and a view from the same spot facing north. The Midland hotel, which is in the art deco style, and contains a mural by Eric Gill. This has been likened to something you would find in a public urinal. The hotel has been the cause of much heart searching as it was allowed to fall into disrepair. More recently it has been bought by a property development company and is currently undergoing restoration.
It remains to be seen whether or not it can be made into a paying proposition given that the tourist infrastructure of Morecambe has also been allowed to deteriorate.

Morecambe promenade looking south. The tower in the centre of the photo is a ride on the fairground. There is a large circular carriage with windows all around, passengers are taken to the top of the tower with then rotates. This gives a fine view over Morecambe bay and the surrounding areas. Regretabley the fairground has now been demolished although at the time of updating this page the 'Polo' tower was still standing.
Morecambe promenade looking north. On the right-hand side, against the skyline is the Midland Hotel, and on the left, jutting out into Morecambe Bay is the Stone Jetty, with a bird theme - several photos of this below.
Here you can see the lovely golden sand, plenty of room for children to play, plenty parking space too.

View looking down the Stone Jetty. This is a wonderful asset to the town. It has a bird theme which children and adults alike find most interesting. Here is a huge bird statue in white marble. The building on the left is a cafe. When the tide is flowing it tears around the end of the jetty.

Stone
jetty. A visitor reads the hopscotch game details and admires the huge
stone eggs. ![]()

Lapwing riddle. Just one of the carved stone panels on the jetty asking a bird riddle, there are lots of them!

Crabs in relief. Another panel on the jetty is devoted to raised relief panels like this one, about 300 mm in diameter. You can see by the worn parts that people really like to touch and feel these.
Large Cockerel. This is several feet high, and located on a roundabout near the promenade. It is most impressive.

Sandwiched metal seabirds. On the land end of the approach to the stone jetty. Beautifully made, with a wingspan of about 1.5 m!

Eric
Morecambe - statue. The statue itself is in the background, in characteristic
pose, right hand in the air, skipping forward. Around his neck a pair of
binoculars, as he was a keen bird watcher. The area in front of the statue
is a super one to explore. The design is modern with lots of interesting
texture and lettering. ![]()
