Sedbergh

Sedbergh, 14km (9 miles) east of Kendal, about 8km (5 miles) east of Junction 37 on the M6. Surprising as it is, Sedbergh is in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, you will see the familiar Ram's Head sign as you drive along the road from the M6. There is a local cattle market on the left as you drive through the town.

Sedbergh is an excellent point to begin your exploration of the Howgills, that range of beautiful hills through which both the M6 and the West Coast Main Line (railway) pass. These hills must be familiar to thousands or travellers who admire them but don't know their names. Above the railway line is a heart-shaped wood, reputedly planted as a memorial to a young soldier killed in the first world war.

The Howgills are rolling and green compared to many of the lakeland mountains, although they present their own challenges. The Calf is the highest at 676 metres, (2095 ft). The top is fairly flat but affords some beautiful views over the M6 towards the lakes. This is a great vantage point.
